When I was approached to illustrate MULTITUDES: The Gospel of Matthew, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to respond to biblical text in a series of twenty large (36″x48″) paintings. The cover painting from Matthew 5 shows the crowds that followed Jesus as he taught them. Seeing them—their needs, their aspirations—he felt compassion toward each one. I wanted to show in those faces what he might have seen.
